Echoes of Reality. Rescue Dogs of Toledo, Ohio.
From Jessica:
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see a strong individual, a good friend, a loving companion? Do you see the echo of the family that raised you? Do you see the person you could be if you were only given the chance? Just like people, dogs are shaped by their experiences and are a reflection of their environments. They learn to interact with the world by how they are treated and how they are taught. They understand a harsh word or a kind pat on the head. The people around them can instill fear or trust, they can shape a dog’s future.
The reality is that humans, for good or bad, have power over the path an animal’s life will take. This is a responsibility not every pet owner takes seriously. For dogs that get let down by their humans, starting over is not always easy. As a result, shelters and rescues try to fill in the gaps and give them a second chance. Animal rescue groups are working hard to ensure dogs have the opportunity to be the best version of themselves and to love what they see in the mirror.
One of these rescues that is working hard to find homeless dogs new homes is Toledo’s PET Bull Project. Not only that, they offer affordable training for people who want to invest in becoming more responsible pet owners and they have a pet food pantry where local families can get food for their animals when they can’t afford it. Their goal is to give the community resources to keep their dogs as part of the family even in tough times.
Toledo’s PET Bull Project is a foster based rescue, meaning all their adoptable dogs live in homes with families. This allows the dogs the best chance to decompress and adapt. Seeing the foster dogs in a home environment gives foster parents a chance to find out who the dog is. Do they like kids, other dogs or even cats? This information is so important to the dogs being matched with adoptive homes they can thrive in.
When we were deciding what to highlight for our FLUFFuary blogs, I knew I wanted to challenge myself artistically and be able to highlight a local animal rescue. I was thinking about my own rescue dog, Pepper, and how she will look at me through the mirror by my bedroom door and bark when she wants out so she doesn’t have to turn around. I am always so amazed that she can make the connection that it is only our reflections.
Pepper reminds us how smart and capable of being self aware dogs are. I wanted to bring that self awareness to light through photos. Allowing these dog’s reflections to be the center of attention to echo the strength, hope and reality of rescue dogs.
All dogs featured in these photos are available for adoption through Toledo’s Pet Bull Project.
Icy
I have been in foster care my whole life. I love people and I am eager to do anything for a treat. I have an outgoing personality but I need to be the only pet in the home.
Hero
I see myself as a lover and a playful guy. Some people might find my size intimidating but I don’t have a mean bone in my body. My foster parent says I should go to a family with older kids because I don’t understand my size.
Riley
I love to play with toys and other dogs or even cats! I can be a little shy around new people but once I get to know you I am good snuggle companion.
Nina
I am a little older around 3-4 but I promise i’m the sweetest and most well rounded girl! I love people and other dogs. Loving people too much is my only downfall, I don’t like to be home alone so would love to have furry a companion to live with.
Serena
I am just 7 months old and i’m told I am going to be a big girl. I am sweet and loving but can be a little nervous about new things. I want a family that will help build my confidence.
Cricket
I am almost two years old and am still looking for my forever home. I am energetic and I love people and to play. My Ideal home would be one that will be active with me but will spend equal time snuggling on the couch.
