You Won't Regret Adopting a Senior Pet. Hammy's Happily Ever After. Toledo Pet Photographer.
From Rebecca:
You spent your whole life with your person. You lived every day together and together you aged. Eventually, your person needed people to take care of them and had to leave.
We see so many senior pets end up in shelters and rescues because their owner had to receive full-time care or passed away. We always hope that owners have plans for their animals in these types of situations. However, sometimes there is not a family member who is willing/able to take on the pet. Sometimes no one realizes how urgent it might be to have a plan. These elderly pets can get lost and misplaced. This is eactly what happened to Hammy.
I asked the Wongrowski family if they would be willing to share their experience bringing home a senior dog. Ham is truly a member of the family and he is so lucky he found his perfect home. It is so important to me to highlight the need there is for senior dogs and cats to be adopted.
From Kylee about Ham:
Who are you/your family?
We’re the Wongrowskis, owners of Luckey Road Lavender Farm. Kylee operates the farm, Scott is a HS teacher, and Sloane. (4) is a nature enthusiast and pup lover.
How did your senior pet come to be a member of your family?
We saw a post online about a local hound needing a home after his owner went into assisted living. We are such hound lovers, he tugged on our heart strings. We went to meet him and knew he needed to come home with us. He and Sloane met and we knew he would be staying. Instant best friends.
Tell us about Ham.
We believe Ham is about 13 years old. He’s a sweet patient old man who loves to snuggle, take naps, and go for short romps around the farm. Although not having much exposure to younger children, he took to Sloane immediately. He tucks her in at night and waits by her door in the morning. He lays patiently while they play dress-up and dolls and even sits in Sloane’s hammock swing with her, reading books.
What factors did you weigh when choosing to adopt a senior pet?
We weren’t totally “ready” for a pup again, but knew that Ham needed the love we have to give. We have raised puppies in other phases of life but having the responsibility to train a puppy along with raising toddler has seemed too high a mountain to climb. A senior pup with an established personality, lazy, snuggly demeanor fit into this phase perfectly for us.
What would you say to people considering adopting an older animal for themselves?
Senior pups have SO much to offer. We have had the great joy of having many senior pups in our life. These older years are slower and sweeter. They are happy to receive love, deserving of the comfort we can offer them.
How was your experience working with Rebecca?
Wonderful as always!
We hope you will consider adopting a senior pet.
