One Year with Our Rescue Dog, Ruby. Pet-Friendly Photography Studio in Toledo, Ohio.
From Rebecca:
One year ago we brought Ruby home! (Technically her adopt-iversary was January 17th, but I haven’t been on time for much lately).
About four months after our dog Beatrice passed away, we started entertaining the idea of bringing a second pup into our home again. Having a stubborn 7-year-old pitbull and a rowdy 3-year-old kid, we wanted to try to find a dog that suited our chaotic environment well. Friendly, trainable and fairly patient with kids were high on the list. We have loved having Titan as our introduction to the world of pitbull-type dogs. We weren’t dead set on getting another one, but knowing how much harder it is to find good homes for them, they were on my mind.
Daniel and I decided to meet a 5-month-old pit mix puppy from Planned Pethood. He was GORGEOUS. A dog photographer’s DREAM. But our son was intimidated by the jumping and nipping and chasing and bouncing off the walls. We had to be honest with ourselves that we don’t have enough time and energy to give to raising a puppy that young to be the best dog it could be.
I had met Ruby a few weeks prior when I visited Hard Licker Ranch to see how they do things. I noticed how patient she was with her “roommates” who were young and had so much energy. She just laid down and gave me her belly and wanted to be loved. Her exact age is unknown, but the vet guessed about 3-years-old. We did a meet and greet with the whole family and Ruby’s personality matched our “pack” much better than the puppy.
Ruby’s not perfect. She has shown to be an attention hog. She herds Titan into the house and she won’t leave him alone when she wants to play. She jumps on people when she’s excited to see you. (Truly it is more like she delicately props her legs up on you to look you in the face and be sure you acknowledge her). We know she will send us through many adventures and hiccups and she will teach us many lessons as the dogs before her have done.
